Exploring the Future of Travel and Identity: Insights from ID@Borders 2025

Last week, Andrejs Katakins — Biometric Solutions Architect, Team Lead, and proud member of the Biometrics Institute — had the opportunity to participate in the Biometrics Institute’s prestigious ID@Borders & Future of Travel Conferenceheld on April 24–25, 2025 in Amsterdam.

Andrejs returned with several key takeaways that highlight the major shifts and conversations shaping the future of travel and identity:

  1. The Schengen Area is preparing for significant changes in its border control procedures. Several major new systems are being introduced, including the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The EES will replace manual passport stamping by automatically recording travelers’ entry and exit, using biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images to enhance security and speed up border crossings. ETIAS will require visa-exempt travelers to apply online for travel authorization before entering the Schengen zone. EES “go-live” expected in Q4 2025. ETIAS will be operational six months after EES.
  2. In addition, the Shared Biometric Matching Service (sBMS) will support these systems by securely storing and managing biometric data, enabling border authorities to verify identities more accurately and fight identity fraud. Later it will connected to others EU systems, such as EURODAC.
  3. Several Schengen countries are also launching Digital Travel Credential (DTC) pilots, aiming to test the use of digital passports stored on mobile devices. These pilots explore how travelers could use a secure digital version of their passport alongside or instead of the physical document, further streamlining the border control process. Together, these innovations are expected to strengthen border management, improve traveler experience, and enhance security across the Schengen Area.
